Elon Musk to Step Down from U.S. Government Role: Reports

Elon Musk to Exit Government Role, Focus on Business

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk is preparing to step down from his special government role under U.S. President Donald Trump, according to a report by Politico. The decision was made jointly by Musk and Trump in recent days, though an exact departure date has not been disclosed.

Musk’s Role in Government

Musk was appointed by Trump to lead cost-cutting efforts and restructure federal agencies, aiming to reduce government spending by $1 trillion. His tenure as a special government employee was expected to last 130 days, which means he could step down by the end of May.

Market Reaction to Musk’s Exit

Following the news, shares of government contractors saw an increase, while Tesla stock—which initially dropped due to weak quarterly deliveries—reversed losses and climbed 3%.

Trump Confirms Musk’s Departure

Speaking to reporters, Trump praised Musk’s contributions but acknowledged that he would soon return to managing Tesla, SpaceX, and other ventures. “He’s done an amazing job, but he has a big company to run,” Trump stated.

Musk Confident in Cost-Cutting Goals

Last week, Musk told Fox News that he was confident in completing most of the planned $1 trillion federal spending cuts before his departure.

No Official Comment Yet

Neither the White House, Musk, nor his government task force have issued an official statement regarding the report.

Musk’s brief but impactful tenure in government is nearing its conclusion, with his next focus likely returning to his business empire.
