ChatGPT Go Now Free in India for One Year: Steps to Activate on Web, Android and iOS

OpenAI Offers Free ChatGPT Go Access in India

OpenAI has rolled out free access to its mid-tier subscription plan, ChatGPT Go, in India for a full year beginning November 4. The plan, which typically costs around USD 5 or approximately ₹400 per month, is now being offered at no cost. The offer is currently available on the ChatGPT website and Android app, while iOS users will gain access in the coming week.

What ChatGPT Go Includes

ChatGPT Go is positioned between the free and Pro versions of ChatGPT and includes a variety of advanced features such as:

  • Faster and more responsive AI output
  • Ten times higher usage limits compared to the free tier
  • Access to the latest GPT-5 model
  • Ability to generate images using text prompts
  • Support for file uploads, document analysis and longer conversations
  • Memory capabilities that personalise future interactions
  • Enhanced productivity tools for work, study, business and creative use cases

These upgrades make the plan suitable for professional, educational and technical applications.

India as a Priority Market for OpenAI

India is OpenAI’s second-largest user base after the United States, with a rapidly expanding audience of students, professionals, entrepreneurs and developers. The launch of free ChatGPT Go access reflects OpenAI’s aim to increase adoption across the country.

The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s IndiaAI Mission, which promotes artificial intelligence education and innovation nationwide. OpenAI stated that it is collaborating with civic and educational bodies to ensure broader access beyond metropolitan regions.

Automatic Upgrade for Existing Subscribers

Users in India who are already subscribed to ChatGPT Go do not need to take any action. Their accounts will be automatically upgraded to receive the 12-month free plan. Once the promotional period ends, standard pricing will resume unless the subscription is cancelled before renewal.

Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT at OpenAI, stated that the decision aims to help more people in India access advanced AI tools and explore new applications in learning and innovation.

How to Activate ChatGPT Go for Free

The free access can be activated by following these steps:

  1. Visit the ChatGPT website or open the mobile app
  2. Log in or create a new OpenAI account
  3. Select the ChatGPT Go plan under subscription options
  4. Enable the free plan if eligible

Activation is currently supported on web and Android. iOS availability will follow shortly.

India’s Growing AI Ecosystem

The launch comes at a time when AI competition in India is increasing. Earlier this year, Perplexity AI introduced complimentary access to its Perplexity Pro plan for select Bharti Airtel users. Technology companies are recognising India as a significant testing ground for large-scale AI adoption due to its user growth and digital readiness.

Conclusion

With a full year of free ChatGPT Go access, Indian users now have the opportunity to explore advanced AI capabilities using GPT-5 at no cost. The initiative is expected to encourage higher adoption across sectors including education, business, technology and digital content creation.
