ISRO Successfully Completes Human Rating of CE20 Cryogenic Engine for Gaganyaan Mission

Gaganyaan Mission– The Gaganyaan mission aims to launch a team of three individuals into a 400-kilometer orbit for a three-day mission and safely return them to Earth.

An official stated on Wednesday that while bolstering India’s efforts to send humans into space under the Gaganyaan mission, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has successfully completed the human rating of its CE20 cryogenic engine.

“With the culmination of the final phase of ground qualification tests on February 13, 2024, ISRO has achieved a significant milestone in the human rating of its CE20 cryogenic engine, which powers the human-rated LVM3 launch vehicle’s cryogenic stage for the Gaganyaan mission. The final test firing was the seventh in a series of vacuum ignition tests conducted at the high altitude test facility at ISRO’s propulsion complex, Mahendragiri,” ISRO said in a press statement.

ISRO stated, “To qualify the CE20 engine for human rating standards, it had to undergo 39 hot firing tests under various operational conditions for a cumulative duration of 8810 seconds, while the minimum human rating qualification requirement is 6350 seconds.”

All ground qualification tests for the CE20 engine for the Gaganyaan program have been successfully completed. The human rating qualification tests for the CE20 engine included performance evaluation under nominal and off-nominal conditions such as thrust, mixture ratio, and oxidizer tank pressure.

What is the Gaganyaan Mission?

Aimed to be launched in 2024-2025, the Gaganyaan mission’s objective is to launch a team of three individuals into a 400-kilometer orbit for a three-day mission and safely return them to Earth’s surface.

ISRO has also completed acceptance testing of the identified flight engine for the Human Spaceflight (G1) mission, which is tentatively slated for the second quarter of 2024. This engine will power the upper stage of the human-rated LVM3 vehicle and has a thrust capability of 19 tons with a specific impulse of 442.5 seconds.
