President Murmu addresses on Independence Day eve: India has been a “beacon of hope” for others

Independence Day 2023: President Droupadi Murmu addressed the nation on the eve of the 77th Independence Day on August 14. She called on the citizens to move forward in a spirit of harmony and brotherhood to realize the dreams of India’s founding fathers. The address was aired from 7 pm on the entire national network of Akashvani and telecast on all Doordarshan channels in Hindi followed by the English version, according to the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Observing that there is a new confidence in ‘India story’, President Droupadi Murmu on Monday on the eve of Independence Day urged the people to move forward with the spirit of brotherhood and stressed that their identity as “citizens of India” is above all other identities of caste, creed, language and region.

In her address to the nation on the eve of 77th Independence Day, President Murmu hailed India’s economic performance amid the global uncertainty, saying the country has been a “beacon of hope” for others and has converted challenges into opportunities.

India has regained its rightful place on the world stage and enhanced its standing in the international order, she said and asserted that with the G20 presidency, the country can nudge decision-making in trade and finance towards equitable progress.

President Murmu called for urgent attention to climate change amid extreme weather-related events.

“One area that scientists and policymakers around the world should be paying more urgent attention to is climate change,” she said. “It is necessary to make efforts at the local, national and global level in the interest of the environment.”

Citing the recent launch of Chandrayaan-3, President Murmu said that the lunar mission is only a stepping stone for our future programs in space. “We have a long way to go.”

She also appealed to the tribal community to enrich their traditions while embracing modernity.

“There are specific programmes to improve the conditions of tribals and encourage them to join the journey of progress. I appeal to our tribal brothers and sisters to enrich their traditions while embracing modernity.”

Murmu said India has converted challenges into opportunities and has recorded high GDP growth. “Farmers have contributed significantly to our economic growth, and the nation feels indebted to them,” she said.

“Inflation at the global level remains a cause for worry. But in India, the government and the Reserve Bank have managed to contain it. The government has succeeded in protecting the common people from high inflation while also providing a more extensive security cover to the poor. The world looks up to India for global economic growth,” she said.
