Rajya Sabha Approves Historic Women’s Reservation Bill: A Major Milestone

Rajya Sabha Approves Historic Women’s Reservation Bill: After an 11-hour debate, the Rajya Sabha (India’s Parliament’s Upper House) unanimously approved the Women’s Reservation Bill on Thursday. After the census and redistricting process, the measure, which had previously been approved by the Lok Sabha (Lower House), will become law and guarantee 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies. With only two AIMIM members voting against the measure in the Lok Sabha, the opposition raised concerns regarding its implementation. The Rajya Sabha’s voting process went off without a hitch.

Prime Minister Modi lauded the law’s passage by the Rajya Sabha as a “landmark moment” for India. It is a celebration of the various women whose tenacity and accomplishments have helped our nation rather than only serving as a measurement. A period when women will have more power and representation in India. We reflect on the tenacity and will of each and every Nari Shakti as we observe this day. India has become better because to this spirit, according to PM Modi’s tweet.

The law has been ongoing for a while, according to India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who discussed it on Thursday. She responded, “We are in a new atmosphere, a new Parliament, a new India. That is why a special session of Parliament was convened for this law. We want the Parliament to consider the finest possible bills.

Opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge voiced his worries during the voting process over the bill’s implementation delay and questioned why Prime Minister Modi couldn’t have done it sooner given his power to enforce currency note bans instantly.

Now that the Women’s Reservation Bill has been approved by both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, the President must sign it. Once it is enacted into law, there will be a 33% female representation quota in the Lok Sabha and state legislatures.
