Diwali 2025 Style Guide: Glow With the Flow

What’s trending, what to skip, and how to remix your wardrobe — so you shine bright at every Diwali event this year.

It’s that time again — lighting diyas, bingeing on mithai, and planning the perfect festive look. From Pinterest boards to Instagram saves, fashion inspo is everywhere. “Festive occasions have become opportunities to express your style and personality,” says designer Bhawna Rao. “It’s about celebrating fashion as much as the festival itself.”

Vibrant Colours In, Pastels Out

“We’ve done pastels for years — it’s time to bring the energy back,” says Rao. Expect bold jewel tones — emerald, ruby, sapphire, sea blue, forest green, and mustard yellow — to dominate wardrobes this season.

Even men are embracing colour. “The more colour, the better,” says Piyush Mohanani of Asuka Couture. “Men want to make a statement with vibrant contrasts, layered tones, and bold prints.”

Motifs & Embroidery: The Finer Details Matter

Forget plain minimalism — embroidery is back in a big way. Think silver zari, marodi, kantha, dabka, and kardana.
Designers are taking inspiration from nature — butterflies, bees, lizards, and even tigers. “Intricate motifs give garments a sense of craftsmanship and royalty,” says Mohanani.

It’s not just about how it looks, but how it’s told. “People love the story behind the embroidery — it adds value and individuality,” adds Rao.

Classic Fabrics, Contemporary Cuts

The lehenga-anarkali-sherwani cycle is evolving. “We’re seeing Indo-Western silhouettes everywhere,” says Rao.

  • Women: Corset tops with harem pants, layered capes over off-shoulder kurtas, or maxi dresses with Indian embroidery.
  • Men: Printed pants with vests, shorter achkans, open bandhgalas, and asymmetric kurtas.

Lightweight fabrics like chanderi, jacquard, and gaji silk are replacing heavy brocades. “People want rich-looking outfits that still let them breathe,” says Mayyur Girotra.

If you invest in just one piece this season, make it a statement coat with intricate embroidery — it’s timeless and instantly elevates any outfit.

The New Kind of Bling

Gone are the days of OTT glitter and sequins. “Today’s sparkle is sleeker — metallic fabrics, mesh overlays, and crystal accents,” says designer Sangeeta Kilachand.

Think mirrorwork capes, metallic corsets, and rhinestone-studded dupattas. For an extra shimmer, add a mini metallic purse — purely for the aesthetic, not the utility.

Jewellery Takes Centre Stage

Minimalism? Not this year. Make jewellery the main character.

Go for sculptural pieces — a bold cuff, oversized earrings, or a standout brooch. “Brooches are huge right now,” says Maheka Mirpuri. “Pin them on dupattas, bags, or even pocket squares.”

Men are also joining the jewellery game — polki pieces, beadwork, crochet designs, pendants, and statement rings are all trending. “Jewellery today is gender-fluid — it’s about personal flair,” adds designer Ashdeen Lilaowala.

Step Lightly, Shine Bright

Comfort finally meets couture. Bejewelled sneakers, embroidered juttis, and zardozi wedges are redefining festive footwear. “They give you posture, poise, and comfort,” says Jinita Sheth of Label Jenn.

Men can pair Kolhapuris, Peshawaris, or embroidered mules with their kurtas — chic yet traditional.

Shop Your Closet First

Stylish doesn’t always mean new. Designers suggest upcycling:

  • Reuse crop tops with mesh skirts or organza dupattas
  • Convert old lehengas into belts or anarkalis into gowns
  • Transform Banarasi saris into vests or scarves
“Fashion with a story is more meaningful,” says Rao.

Even stars like Janhvi Kapoor are reviving heirloom textiles from Sridevi’s wardrobe — proving sustainability can be stunning.

Quick Festive Style Tips

Invest in: A dramatic long dupatta or embroidered bomber jacket — easy upgrades that elevate any look.
Celebrity inspo:

  • Edgy: Janhvi Kapoor’s mix of heirlooms and modern silhouettes
  • Classic: Deepika Padukone’s statement chokers and clean drapes
  • Menswear icons: Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, and SRK — all flaunting layered kurtas and jewellery

Timeless picks: A white chikankari kurta — effortlessly elegant and endlessly versatile.
