Planning a Lip Filler Appointment? Everything You Need to Know First

Lip Fillers: Popular Yet Misunderstood

Getting lip fillers, cheek lifts, or Botox injections is becoming as common as getting a new haircut. While these cosmetic enhancements can enhance facial aesthetics and smooth out wrinkles, complications can occur. A plumper lip may look appealing, but the procedure isn’t risk-free.

Uorfi Javed recently shared a video of herself dissolving lip fillers after experiencing swelling and misalignment, highlighting the realities behind these treatments. Her story sparks important discussions about the safety of lip fillers and non-invasive beauty treatments.

Lip Fillers vs Botox: Know the Difference

It’s essential to understand the difference between Botox and dermal fillers:

  • Botox: A purified neurotoxin that temporarily relaxes facial muscles to smooth dynamic wrinkles like frown lines.
  • Dermal Fillers: Often made of hyaluronic acid (HA), fillers restore lost volume, enhance lips, and fill deeper lines or hollows.

While these terms are often used interchangeably, their purposes and effects are distinct.

What You Must Know Before Getting Lip Fillers

1. Understand the Procedure

Dermal fillers come in three types:

  1. Temporary (HA-based) fillers
  2. Semi-permanent fillers
  3. Permanent fillers

Dr. Viral Desai, cosmetic surgeon at DHI India, explains:

“Plain hyaluronic acid dissolves within a day. Cross-linked HA fillers last between two to eight months. Always start small and gradually add more if needed.”

2. Choose a Trusted Professional

Selecting a certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon is critical. Dr. Khushboo Jha of Metro Hospital advises:

“The injector must understand your facial anatomy. Fillers enhance, not transform. Incorrect placement can cause lumps or, in rare cases, serious complications like blindness.”

Can Lip Fillers Be Reversed?

Yes, fillers can be dissolved, but it comes with considerations:

  • Hyaluronidase is the enzyme used to dissolve HA fillers. Injections may sting or burn.
  • Allergy testing is essential, as rare reactions can occur.
  • Bruising and swelling are common, especially on lips.
  • Full results may take 24–72 hours, with up to a week for complete breakdown. Multiple sessions might be necessary.
  • Wait 2–4 weeks before refilling to allow tissue recovery.

Age, Timing, and Frequency of Lip Fillers

  • Age: Procedures are generally recommended for those 21 years and older.
  • Frequency: Overdoing fillers can cause tissue hardening (fibrosis). Experts advise moderation.
  • Timing: Lips naturally lose volume with age, but young individuals with uneven lips may benefit from careful treatment.

Cost of Lip Fillers and Dissolving Treatments

  • HA-based lip fillers: ₹18,000–₹30,000 per session
  • Dissolving with hyaluronidase: ₹6,000–₹15,000 depending on treatment area and number of sessions

Bottom Line: Be Informed Before You Decide

Getting lip fillers is a personal choice. The key is to be informed: know the procedure, choose the right professional, and understand the risks and costs.

Dr. Desai emphasizes:

“Celebrity influence is strong, but it’s important to know your limits. Stop if it’s too much. The right product in the right hands rarely causes problems.”
