Dermatologist-Approved Summer Skincare: How to Protect and Nourish Your Skin

As temperatures soar, so does the risk of heat-related skin issues, from sunburns to clogged pores and dehydration. With an increase in preventable dermatological conditions during the summer months, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Nidhi Singh Tandon shares her expert insights on maintaining healthy skin. Unlike marketing-driven skincare fads, Dr. Tandon’s recommendations are backed by clinical research and dermatological expertise, ensuring that your summer skincare routine is both effective and safe. From sunscreen essentials to post-sun repair, here’s everything you need to know to keep your skin glowing and protected all season long.

In response to the rising incidence of heat-related dermatological conditions in parts of the country, board certified dermatologist Dr. Nidhi Singh Tandon is glad to share a brief guide for surviving the summer months.

Unlike marketing-driven skincare advice, Dr. Tandon provides medically sound protocols for managing and preventing common summer dermatological concerns based on peer-reviewed research and clinical experience. “As dermatologists, we see a significant increase in preventable skin conditions during summer months,” states Dr. Tandon.

Summer often requires adjusting your regular skincare regimen, notes Dr. Tandon. She recommends regular medical cleanups to maintain skin health, switching to lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizers, incorporating antioxidant serums containing vitamin C to fight free radical damage, using gentle exfoliants to prevent clogged pores from sweat and sunscreen and increasing hydration both topically and through increased water intake.

Daily sunscreen application remains the cornerstone of summer skincare. Dr. Tandon advises using a broad-spectrum SPF 30-50 sunscreen and reapplying every two hours when outdoors. “Look for formulations containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for maximum protection against UVA and UVB rays,” she explains. Protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and seeking shade should complement sunscreen use. Dr. Tandon also emphasizes the importance of UV-blocking sunglasses to protect the delicate skin around the eyes.

Despite best prevention efforts, increased sun exposure is common during summer months. For post-sun care, Dr. Tandon recommends soothing ingredients like aloe vera and niacinamide to calm inflammation, along with repairing peptides and ceramides to strengthen the skin barrier. “If you notice any new or changing spots on your skin, don’t wait to have them evaluated,” cautions Dr. Tandon.
