Op-Ed: Raksha Bandhan 2023: Celebrating Sibling Bonds and Gender Equality

Celebrating Sibling Bonds and Gender Equality: Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi is an important and memorable Indian festival. It is a time to reflect on the bonds of closeness and protection among siblings. Rakhi is not just a thread tied on the wrist, but it signifies much more. The celebration of Rakhi symbolizes the love, support, and protective emotions between a brother and sister. But in the context of current times, Raksha bandhan has become the centre of profound significance. Nowadays, it discusses about gender roles in the society and their relationship to each other.

The Shifting Symbolism to promote Gender Equality

Conventionally, Rakshabandhan represented a brother’s duty and oath to guard his sister from any harm. But with evolving gender dynamics, the time has come to redefine this traditional role. Today the duty of protection is no more of a male, rather it has extended itself to the feminine counterpart as well. In this redefined bond between a brother and sister both of them promises and recognizes to love, respect and nurture each other.

Enablement Through Rakhi

In another way, tying a rakhi can be considered a way to enable both brothers and sisters in the same way. It is a manner where both stands firm for each other, their ambitions and endeavours. Raksha bandhan offers a path to breakaway from the conventional gender roles and create a deeper emotional support system for a sister. This builds a society which breaks the stereotypes and paves a way for a better-balanced society.

Inclusivity and Diversity driving a Social Change

This Indian festival goes beyond the connections blood relations. Friends, colleagues, and neighbours can tie rakhis as a sign of solidarity, nurturing a societal harmony and closeness. This inclusivity and diversity has the capability to address greater social issues and spread awareness about empowerment and harmony. This gives Raksha bandhan an immense potential to be the drivers of societal change for everyone.

Concluding words for Gender Equality

Raksha bandhan has always been a festival of affection and fondness, however, with time it has imbibed newer purposes to it. As on this Raksha bandhan 2023 we tie rakhis, we stand to support, love, and protect each other. This Indian festival can be the catalyst for a positive change in the society, where sibling relationships are based on sharing mutual respect, support, and shared aspirations as a part of a more profound future.

Commenting on promotion of gender equality on this day, Shreya Sharma, Founder, Rest The Case highlights,

Recognizing how special sibling relationships are while also making sure that everyone is treated equally, regardless of their gender, shows how we’re working towards a more peaceful world. When we celebrate the strong bonds between brothers and sisters, we’re also building a strong base for a society where respect matters more than whether someone is a boy or a girl. This celebration reminds us that when we treat everyone fairly in our families, it has a positive impact that spreads out, making the whole world a better and more inclusive place, like putting together a beautiful puzzle that shows fairness and togetherness.
