UN report: India is projected to surpass China as the world’s most populous country in 2023, according to the 27th edition of the United Nations’ World Population Prospects, 2022, released on Monday.
In 2022, China remains the most populous country in the world with 1,426 million, but India has caught up with a marginally less population of 1,412 million.
The global population will reach 8 billion on November 15, 2022, more than three times the population of 2.5 billion in 1950.
India’s present population
According to Census 2011, the population of India was 1.21 billion. The current population in India is estimated to be around 1.37 billion (according to United Nations data 2020) and 1,508,525,200,416 approx. according to world meter in 2022.
India’s urban population
India’s urban population is estimated to stand at 675 million in 2035, the second-highest behind China’s one billion, the UN has said in a report, noting that after the COVID-19 pandemic, the global urban population is back on track to grow by another 2.2 billion by 2050.
The United Nations-Habitat’s World Cities Report 2022, released on Wednesday, said that rapid urbanisation was only temporarily delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year, the global population will reach 8 billion people; presenting new challenges, but also new opportunities for humanity.
Together, we have the power to create a more peaceful & prosperous future for all.
