In an industry where trends shift like the wind, Vanika Fashions has carved a niche by staying rooted in tradition while embracing the spirit of modern femininity. We sat down with Avinash Gupta, founder of the brand, to explore the inspirations, challenges, and soulful storytelling that drive his vision. From sustainable practices to the poetic roots of each collection, this is more than fashion—it’s wearable art with heart.
What was the inspiration behind starting Vanika Fashions?
Vanika was born out of a desire to bridge artistry with everyday wear. I’ve always believed that clothing should evoke emotion something that makes a woman feel both powerful and graceful. Growing up, I was surrounded by beautiful Indian textiles and age-old craftsmanship. I wanted to revive that richness but through a lens that today’s woman relates to something that feels timeless, yet refreshingly modern.
How do you stay aligned with traditional aesthetics while appealing to modern women?
It’s all about balance. We deeply respect traditional Indian art forms, embroidery techniques, and silhouettes but we reimagine them with cleaner cuts, lighter fabrics, and versatile styling. Our collections are rooted in culture but designed to move with today’s woman, whether she’s at a festive celebration or at a destination brunch.
Sustainability is a growing concern in fashion. How is Vanika responding to that?
We believe fashion can be both beautiful and responsible. At Vanika, we work with artisans who use natural dyes and sustainable fabrics wherever possible. Our pieces are made in small, thoughtful batches to avoid overproduction, and we’re actively working on reducing fabric waste and introducing upcycled designs. Sustainability isn’t a trend for us it’s a commitment to the future.
What have been the biggest challenges and milestones for Vanika so far?
One of the biggest challenges was entering a highly competitive market while staying true to our niche wearable art rooted in heritage. But it’s also been our greatest strength. A key milestone was when our “Nazm” collection went viral organically we realized then that there’s a strong appetite for contemporary Indian fashion with soul. Opening our first flagship store was another huge moment for the brand and for me personally.
What inspires your designs at Vanika Fashions?
A lot of our inspiration comes from poetry, travel, and nature. I’m constantly drawn to textures like the patterns left by sea foam on sand or the faded walls of old palaces. Indian folklore and miniature paintings often guide our motifs and color palettes. But more than anything, I’m inspired by the women who wear Vanika their stories, strength, and individuality.
Can you share a story behind one of your most loved pieces?
Absolutely. Our “Noor” kurta set was inspired by a vintage phulkari dupatta I found in my grandmother’s old trunk. We recreated the motifs in hand-embroidered pastel threads on a modern silhouette. One customer wore it for her engagement and later told us it made her feel like “sunlight in silk” moments like that are why I do what I do.
Can you talk about any memorable collaborations or campaigns?
Our Diwali campaign last year, “Light Within,” was a turning point. We collaborated with everyday women entrepreneurs, teachers, mothers instead of models. It wasn’t just a shoot, it was a celebration of inner light and strength. The stories that came out of it were deeply moving and the response we received was overwhelming.
How important is influencer or content marketing to the brand?
Very important but authenticity is key. We’re not just looking for visibility, we seek alignment. When creators resonate with our pieces and share their personal styling stories, it builds trust. We’ve seen incredible engagement when we’ve partnered with micro-influencers who genuinely love and live in our clothes.
How do you plan to scale Vanika’s digital presence?
We’re focused on creating immersive storytelling experiences whether it’s through reels that showcase the making of a garment, behind-the-scenes with artisans, or virtual styling sessions. We’re also expanding our e-commerce platform and investing in smarter tech integrations to make the online shopping experience seamless and soulful.
Do you have a favorite piece from the brand? What makes it special?
Yes, the “Raag” anarkali holds a special place in my heart. It was one of our earliest designs and embodies everything Vanika stands for elegance, movement, and a touch of nostalgia. Every time I wear it, it reminds me of why I started to create pieces that feel like a melody you can wear.
