As Mahabali’s popularity and influence grew, the Gods sought the help of Lord Vishnu. Vishnu appeared before the king in the form of Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin, and asked Mahabali for as much land as he could cover in three steps.
Mahabali agreed. Vamana then grew into a gigantic form, covering the Earth with his first step and the sky with his second. With nowhere left for the third step, Mahabali offered his own head.
Vishnu sent Mahabali to the underworld but, moved by his devotion and generosity, granted him a special boon: he could return once every year to visit his people.
Onam is celebrated as a symbol of this homecoming, with families coming together to welcome King Mahabali.
