
This time the Amavasya date of Bhadrapada month is falling on 21 September 2025, Sunday. It is called Sarv Moksha Amavasya or Sarv Pitru Amavasya. According to the scriptures, this day is special for the Shraddha of all those ancestors, whose death date is unknown, Shraddha has not been possible throughout the year or who have died an untimely death. It is believed that the Tarpan and Pinddaan performed on this day satisfies all the ancestors and gives them salvation.
When is Sarv Moksha Amavasya this time
This year the Amavasya date will start on 21 September at 12:16 pm and will end on 22 September at 1:23 pm. Daytime is considered the best for Shraddha and Tarpan. In the auspicious time, Kutup Kaal will be from 11:50 am to 12:38 pm, Rauhin Kaal from 12:38 pm to 1:27 pm and afternoon Kaal from 1:27 pm to 3:53 pm.
Whose Shradh is performed
According to religious beliefs, Shradh of all ancestors including father, mother, grandparents, maternal grandparents, brother-sister, husband-wife can be performed on this day. Especially those souls who died suddenly in an accident, epidemic, war or other unusual circumstances, their Shradh is also performed on this day.
Why is there special importance
Pundits believe that on Sarv Moksha Amavasya, ancestors especially come to earth and accept Shradh-Tarpan. It is considered best to perform Pinddaan on the banks of Ganga, Yamuna or any holy river on this day. If this is not possible, then Tarpan can be done at home in a proper manner. Donation of food and feeding Brahmins is also said to be very pious on this day.
